Parenthood at Work and Disability

Disability

Humberside Fire & Rescue Service is committed to creating a workplace where all colleagues feel supported, valued and able to thrive. We recognise that disability can be physical, sensory, mental health–related, neurodivergent, chronic, visible, or invisible — and that the impact of parenthood, pregnancy, fertility treatment, adoption or surrogacy may interact with existing conditions. Our priority is to ensure you feel safe, included and supported throughout.

Information you share about a disability or health condition will always be treated sensitively and confidentially, in line with our commitment to a respectful and inclusive workplace culture.

Who You Can Talk To

If you have a disability or health condition that may affect your work or your parenthood journey, you are encouraged to start a conversation early with:

  • Your Line Manager

They can help explore initial support needs, identify early adjustments and coordinate with specialist teams.

  • Your HR Service Partner

Your HR Service Partner can offer tailored guidance, outline relevant policies and help navigate formal processes or support routes.

You may bring someone with you to any conversation if this helps you feel more comfortable.

Occupational Health (OH)

Occupational Health provides specialist, confidential advice to help you work safely and comfortably. An OH referral may be helpful if:

  • Your condition is new, changing or newly diagnosed
  • You require advice on safe working during pregnancy or early parenthood
  • You need recommendations for workplace adjustments
  • You want clarity on how your condition may interact with your role

Referrals are usually arranged by your Line Manager or HR Service Partner and are designed to support you.

Reasonable Adjustments

HFRS has a legal duty under the Equality Act 2010 to consider reasonable adjustments for disabled employees. This commitment is also reflected across our HR policies and procedures.

Examples of adjustments include:

  • Modified duties
  • Specialist software or equipment
  • Adjustments linked to fatigue, pain, mental health or neurodiversity
  • Temporary adjustments during pregnancy or post‑birth recovery

Your HR Service Partner can help you navigate suitable options.

Reasonable Adjustments Passport

To simplify and safeguard your agreed support, HFRS uses a Reasonable Adjustments Passport. This document:

  • Records agreed adjustments in one place
  • Supports continuity if you change manager or role
  • Helps ensure adjustments are reviewed regularly
  • Reduces the need to re‑explain your circumstances

You can update your passport at any time with support from HR.

Neurodiversity & Specialist Support – Creased Puddle

HFRS works with Creased Puddle, specialist neurodiversity practitioners who provide:

  • Diagnostic assessments (e.g., dyslexia, dyspraxia, ADHD, autism)
  • Workplace strategy coaching
  • Tailored recommendations for adjustments
  • Guidance for managers supporting neurodivergent colleagues

If you feel Creased Puddle support may benefit you, please speak to your Line Manager or HR Service Partner.

If You’re Not Sure Where to Start

If you do not know which team to approach first, you can always email HR@humbersidefire.gov.uk, as signposted throughout handbook communications.
The HR team will guide you to the right support.

HFRS remains committed to ensuring all colleagues are treated with dignity and respect and can access the support they need at every stage of their parenthood journey.
